The new release of Final Cut Pro 7 part of the Final Cut Studio. While FCP 7 has updated the log and transfer interface to work directly with P2, RED and AVCintra, plus an automated import mode as soon as the card/drive mounts.

This is not the same for the Sony Xdcam EX cameras, the workflow for FCP 6 is identical to FCP 7 and will consist of installing the called Clip Browser software from Sony and the SxS card drivers. In addition you will need XDCAM Transfer utility to playback the video clips, read/amend the clip metadata, create subclips, and re-wrap them into MOV files for editing with Final Cut Pro.

    Hi there,

Actually since Final Cut Pro 6, you can use a Free Plug-in made by Sony, that allows you to Log and Transfer to import from them SxS Memory card.

The name is: Log and Transfer Utility for Apple FCP Version 1.00

This is a lot faster and easer than using the Clip Browser. The Log and Transfer plug-in for XDCAM EX work very nice. I will recomend to use this workflow instead of Clip Browser or Transfer Manager. Please visit this link to read more about this plugin and to donwload it

Also if you buy the Calibrated Software MP4 Import Quicktime Component, you can drag and drop the MP4 files directly to the Final Cut Pro timeline! this is awesome too!

I am on the fence between purchasing an ex3 or a z7u. I do long-form doc work, and am leaning toward a z7u, but have to see its output. Does anyone doc which doc reality series were sourced with a z7u…or even a z1u, versus an ex3…or even an ex1?

Hi the Z7 only records HDV format the EX3 records High definition Format. Much MTV content is Z1 sourced, the BBC and Sky use Z1’s but for Standard definition acquisition, if a BBC programme is made in high definition only 20% can consist of Z1 or HDV material. The Z1 is 1/3 inch chip and used standard definition lens.

    hi guys,

i shot on EX3 & copied the BPAV folder to an external hard drive. i just got my new macpro with FCP 7. i copied the BPAV folder to the media drive on my macpro. now i need to import the footage to FCP! i tried the clip browser to convert the files into .mxf as a friend suggested. then installed the log & transfer plug-in from sony. i still cannot import anything!

i understand that from now on i have 2 import the footage directly from the camera. but im sure there must be some way 2 do it from the hard drive.

the deadline is approaching! HELP PLZ!

    thnx & regards,

    Nader

    Hi Nader

How did solve your XD-CAM issues?

  10. admin says:

I have no problems with the Xdcam EX workflow for FCP, Premiere or Avid. The key thing is backing up and archiving for projects.
